SECTION 4.

Sir,

Foreign Office to India Office.*

Foreign Office, July 25, 1908. WITH reference to the letter from this Office of the 18th instant, I am directed by Secretary Sir Edward Grey to transmit to you herewith, to be laid before the Secretary of State for India, a copy of a note which has been received from the American Ambassador regarding the proposed Joint Commission on Opium.†

I am to inquire whether, in Viscount Morley's opinion, the draft note contained in the letter already mentioned should stand, subject to the necessary verbal alterations, to meet the present position of the case, and I am to request that an answer may be returned to that letter as soon as possible.

Sir E. Grey will be glad to learn, at the same time, whether Viscount Morley sees any objection to the date of the meeting of the Joint Commission at Shanghae being fixed for the 1st January next.

* Also to Colonial Office, mutatis mutandis.

[1844 bb-4]

I am, &c.

(Signed)

F. A. CAMPBELL.

† Mr. Whitelaw Reid, July 12, 1908.
